What is Batscapes?

Launch of Batscapes

The Batscapes Project covers the council districts of Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire and aims to involve all elements of the local community in the protection of horseshoe bats and other bat species together with the local landscape features that support them.

Batscapes is a partnership project recognising the international importance of our region for bats and particularly the endangered horseshoe bats. The term ‘Batscapes’ refers to the key role the local landscape plays in the survival of bats.

The project will run for three years, after which it is hoped that the information collected and disseminated along with the increased number of trained bat volunteers will ensure a continued brighter future for our regions bats.

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) enables communities to celebrate, look after and learn more about our diverse heritage.



English Nature is the Government funded body whose purpose is to promote the conservation of England's wildlife and natural features.



Bath & North East Somerset Council is one of the Unitary Authority areas covered by the Batscapes project.



South Gloucestershire Council is one of the Unitary Authority areas covered by the Batscapes project.



Avon Bat Group is a voluntary group holding meetings, talks, walks and other events about bats in the former Avon area.



Avon Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group exists to provide farmers, landowners and other clients with the best opportunity for environmental gain through cost effective, quality solutions.



Avon Wildlife Trust looks after 37 nature reserves inthe former county of Avon, covering a total of 700 hectares and including 12 Sites of Special Scientific Interest.



The Duchy of Cornwall owns land totalling an area of about 57,091 hectares in 25 counties across the UK.



Bristol Regional Environmental Records Centre collects, manages and distributes ecological and geological data for the former county of Avon.



Wildthings brings biodiversity alive in Bath & North East Somerset. Wildthings is a partnership delivering local Biodiversity Action.
